Feral dogs euthanized; charges weighed after maulings
LEXINGTON - The dogs that authorities say killed a University of Georgia librarian and her elderly husband Friday night were euthanized Tuesday at the Madison Oglethorpe Animal Shelter by court order.
Cats are from Venus, Dogs are from Mars
The saying "fighting like cats and dogs" had to come from somewhere. But in Janis Cook's experience, the phrase was far from reality. When she brought a service dog into the household that her cat had ruled for years, the Annandale, Virginia, pet owner was pleasantly surprised to see that the dog and cat actually got along well.
How Aggressive Is Your Canine?
Using a survey called the C-BARQ (Canine Behavioral Assessment and Research Questionnaire), researchers collected results from both online respondents and a sampling of members of 11 breed clubs recognized by the American Kennel Club. Remember the saying "It's not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog"? It turns out the surveys found two small dog breeds, Chihuahuas and dachshunds, rated high on aggression toward both humans and other animals.
Adopting an Adult Dog
Is there room in your house for a new dog? If so, new doesn't necessarily mean young. For many of us, an adult dog is often a better choice for a new canine companion than a puppy would be. Adult dogs are usually housetrained and they often know a few commands. Puppies, on the other hand, require training from scratch, and that means more work for you. While it's natural to be drawn to the cuteness of a puppy, the truth is that puppy cuteness only lasts for a few months. Here's the truth behind adult dog adoption.

City Dog, Country Dog
Andrea Linne's 18-month-old miniature French poodle, Charlie, is accustomed to taking walks on a leash through the New York City streets and to life in an apartment building. During a recent trip to the country, however, this city dog enjoyed running free in a fenced-in yard and walking along the beach. "You can't do that in Central Park," Linne says.
Dog Blood Banks Save Canine Lives
Checkers and his owner, veterinary technician Bonnie Heitz, acted as heroes, even though their names never made the headlines. While this pair may not be familiar to you, Checkers, the Australian Shepherd from Concord, Calif. donated blood to save the lives of countless dogs that required blood transfusions to treat trauma, cancer, and other life-threatening conditions. These dogs were given a second chance because of Checkers, who passed away at a ripe old age in 1990. Both he and his owner helped inspire additional canine blood donations, which have since led to organized dog blood banks nationwide
